The Big and Little Dippers are probably two of
the first patterns learned by northern
hemisphere observers. The Little Dipper would
have been a rather unimportant pattern except
for the fact that Polaris, the pole star is
located at the end of its handle, and the Big
Dipper's two end stars point at Polaris.
Officially, these patterns are not
constellations, but rather just parts of
the official constellations Ursa Major and Ursa
Minor, respectively.
