    3 dan and above are required to attend. Sat Alhambra, Sun Long Beach. Norwalk participants include Henmi sensei, Kodama Jean, Kariya Yoshijiro, Chang Jeffrey, Domen Sumi, Amano Shotaro, Hamamura Yu; bento order for Kodama and Kariya (Henmi sensei's is provided by the federation since he's an instructor). See the seminar page for details, including what to bring. Seminar participants are assumed to already know basic conduct, movement, flag positioning, and calls.

    Norwalk kenshi: be sure to review the shiai page, not just 3dan and above but everyone, since the first dojo tournament of the year will be next Monday!

    This event is being held as part of the first AUSKF iaido education tour, featuring Kishimoto sensei from Japan. Norwalk participants include Okuno sensei, Ralutin sensei, Kodama Jean, Toh Shauna, Kariya Yoshijiro, Mendez Gary.

    At the end of kendo practice we handed out a hardcopy from the keiko page in the reference section on the Norwalk Dojo website.

    Because we are hosting iaido with Oda sensei, there is no kendo keiko tonight. Instead please study on your own, in particular the keiko page page in the reference section on the Norwalk Dojo website (last Monday's handout). People in bogu come to Sunday's special practice.

    The Norwalk contingent was small this year, but everyone came home a winner!

    Congratulations to Yoon Courtney for taking 3rd place (14-15 division) and for being a member of the SCKF junior team, which placed 3rd. And congratulations to Kariya Yoshijiro and Yoon Brian, who were members of the SCKF senior team which took 1st place! Great job, everyone!

  • Please pay your AUSKF and SCKF federation dues
    We are now collecting federation dues for 2013. Fees are by age:
          17 and under: $39
          18 and over: $66
    Deadline is Fri Mar 15. If you cannot bring payment to the dojo by this date please email norwalkkendo@gmail.com.

    Note: please pay up now even if you don't think you'll be able to participate regularly until later in the year. There is no benefit to delaying (federation dues are the same whether you join now or in December). If you join now, on the other hand, your federation membership will be backdated to Jan 1, 2013. More importantly for returning yudansha, your membership will be continuous from 2012 and you will be eligible for the SCKF Championship tournaments in June and September. Also, March membership numbers determine AUSKF election voting. If you know anyone who is "missing in action", please contact them to let them know we welcome all old members back!

  • Sun 3/24/13: Center spring clean up, 9am-12pm
    Kendo's duty is to clean the kitchen and our storage room. We will need all adults/parents who are not practicing to work on Friday night 3/22, and all remaining kenshi and parents to work Sunday morning, 9am-12pm. If you are unable to attend either day, you will be assigned laundry duty!

  • Shinsa preparations
    We will be reviewing basics, which is important for everyone (not just those entered in the shinsa), including the kihon test and the new 2-person rei procedure which will be used by yudansha applicants at the shinsa.

    During April we will have kata practice every Monday for shinsa applicants. You may also practice on your own during Friday ato-geiko.

  • SEJSCC tshirt design contest; Tomodachi newsletter
    The Center is sponsoring a tshirt design contest to commemorate the Center carnival (aka cultural festival) 50th anniversary, see flyer for details. Deadline is April 3.

    Also, Mary Iwami is stepping down as editor of the Tomodachi newsletter after many years of service. The Center is looking to our youth to take over, see memo for details.

    • North-South tournament 4/21: suggest each participating dojo give a donation to NCKF. There will be an open youth keiko on Saturday from 1-5pm at Lee HS.
    • AUSKF Jr Gasshuku 4/28 at Lomita Park Gym: approx 50 from all federations except PNKF, about 10 from SCKF
    • Jr Nationals 6/23 in Las Vegas: need more shinpan and volunteers. Renting bus(es), need an estimate for riders.

    Message from Mike Yoshimura: "I am happy to announce that we have been blessed with a beautiful daughter. Her name is Naomi (nah-OH-mee, not nay-OH-mee). She was born on Thu, Apr 25th at 1:10am, weighing 6 lbs 6 oz and 19 inches. Both Mom and Baby are doing well."

    We are saddened by the passing of former Norwalk kenshi Nora Izumihara's mother. The funeral will take place at 11am at Orange County Buddhist Church. There will be a short reception with lunch following the funeral at the Royal Garden restaurant to celebrate her life.

    Thank you to everyone who came out to help construct kendo's two kazari for the cultural festival (see notes from the tanabata workshop last March). The kazari will be displayed around the ondo circle, interspersed with the usual festival lanterns. Click on the image at left to see the full picture of both kazari (as modeled by Yoon Brian).

    Extra big thanks to Fu Linda for masterminding the designs, not to mention purchasing and preparing the materials!

    Congratulations to Moon Joshua, who was awarded kantosho (fighting spirit award) in the 5-4 kyu group, and Kim Matthew, who was awarded kantosho in the 0-6 kyu group. This was Matthew's first tournament!

    • cultural festival
      • ondo practice 7:30pm Mon and Thu from 7/8 to 7/25. Do not park in the front area of the parking lot.
      • on festival days must park outside the premises (only handicapped and seniors may park inside). Kendo has one reserved spot for running errands.
      • security: be extra vigilent since may have strangers present (5-city ads)
      • any groups with medical professionals please notify when they are scheduled to be at the Center
      • food booths: see Linda Kusuda's handouts, including sign posting requirements; be sure to have a thermometer
      • use outside sinks for dishwashing only (not food)
      • do not throw meat trimmings into the dumpster or trash (bag and refrigerate until trash pick up Wed, or maybe combine into one container with dry ice?). Grease buckets will be there until Tue (use to dispose of grease and oil; no water).
      • complimentary tickets: make sure has Shinomoto red stamp. blue=meal for dignitaries; pink=$1 for neighbors.

  • Restricted parking Mondays 7/8, 7/15, and 7/22
    Ondo practice for the cultural festival will be conducted in the front parking lot on Mondays and Thursdays from 7:30pm. For Monday keiko, please do not park in the area by the ondo circle, and be careful of the ondo participants, especially small children.

    Mandatory meeting for all Norwalk Kendo Dojo parents and adults to discuss new Center duties this year and to plan work shifts.

    Welcome new kenshi: Hong Noah, Hong Ellie, Hong Daniel, Han, Eun Hee, Han Katherine.

  • Wed 7/10/13: Camp Hanabi kendo demonstration, 1:30pm
    Camp Hanabi is SEJSCC's week-long day camp for kids 5-10. Today from 1:30-2:30pm we put on a kendo demonstration followed by a brief kendo lesson for the kids. Thank you to everyone who came out to volunteer! We were a bit overwhelmed trying to teach kendo to 50 kids, but apparently they had a good time.

    SCKF is sponsoring a contingent. Our own Yoon Courtney (participant) and Yoon Brian (chaperone) were among those selected to attend.

    Courtney placed best 8 in individual competition, and was on the SCKF team which took 3rd. Congratulations!

    Henmi sensei and Shikai sensei led the seminar. Kodama Jean, Kariya Yoshijiro, Cho In Ho, and Yoon Brian also attended.

  • Mon 7/22/13: soran bushi lesson, 8:30pm
    Julie Koga of Hikari Taiko conducted a training session on soran bushi. A good time was had by all, not to mention a great work out! Thank you so much to Julie and her assistants Harriet Yamada and Allison Sunahara.

  • Fri 7/26/13: festival preparations and demo dry run, 6pm
    No keiko, as tarps will cover the gym floor, plus everyone will be helping with tent set up and food prep. Everyone participating in the demonstration: please meet at 7:30pm for a dry run.

  • Sat-Sun 7/27-28/13: SEJSCC Cultural Festival
    This is our big extended dojo event where we need help from all family members, friends, past members, etc, to prepare for, operate, and put away our carnival booths. Work duty shifts are now posted. Click on the flyer at right for the overall schedule. We will be putting on a kendo demonstration on Saturday at 4pm. Note: parking at the Center is only for handicapped and seniors; all others please use street parking.

    During keiko we reviewed chakuso, including how to put on keikogi, hakama, and bogu (see dojo shinsa page for notes). We also practiced the kihon test.

  • Sat 10/5/13: SEJSCC holiday boutique and pancake breakfast
    Following the breakfast, Norwalk members went to visit Yamaguchi sensei's grave at Rose Hills.

    At the end of practice we observed a moment of silence to commemorate the 1 year anniversary of Yamaguchi sensei's passing (see article).

    During keiko we practiced kihon test and started talking about the SCKF shinsa. A preliminary list of Norwalk participants was announced (RSVP and bring check by next Friday's practice).

    After keiko we had yudansha practice, plus some follow up kata testing (Cho In Ho w/Kariya sensei).

  • Mon 12/16/13: Henmi sensei's announcement
    Tonight Henmi sensei announced his retirement from kendo after 40 years at Norwalk Dojo. He will attend the Christmas party on Friday. Everyone (past as well as present members) please come out to express our appreciation for his teachings and to wish him well!

    Tonight's shiai geiko cancelled due to shock.

  • Fri 12/20/13: NOR Christmas Party
    Save the date! All members are required to attend and have fun! Please fill out the sign up sheet to bring one main dish and one side dish, plus dessert if possible. Don't bring a door prize. This year, instead of a general raffle, we will have a photo booth so you can make your own take-home party remembrance!

    Henmi sensei is retiring, so everyone please come out to help us express our gratitude and best wishes.

    Thank to everyone who came out to the party. It was our first time having the photo booth, which was a great success. Of course the food was great. Thank you especially to all the moms, not only for tonight's feast, but for working so hard for us all year long.

    Congratulations to kenshi who received special awards at the party: monthly tournament winners Moon Joshua (0-5kyu), Ji Daniel (4-1kyu), Trost Jeffrey (adult kyu), and Amano Shotaro (yudansha), and sensei's pick for Steveston Taikai Yoon Courtney and Moon Joshua. Also, congratulations again to everyone who received new ranks in the May and October shinsas.

    And thank you to Nguyen Emil for being MC, to Domen Sumi and Chang Jeffrey for planning and running the games (it was just for the kids this year), and to Mrs Horii (TOR) for her wonderful photographs.

    Everyone please arrive early so we can take one last dojo photo with Henmi sensei before his retirement. Photo will be at 7pm. After that we will have our traditional last keiko.

    Thanks very much to the parents for blowing up the balloons, and to Sumi for running the fun and games.
