Nisei Week Parade with Tanaka Charlie Sensei
Sunday 8/14/16, Little Tokyo

  • 7/13/16 announcement from Mike Yu

    Dear Sensei and Representative,

This year's annual Nisei Week Grand Parade on Aug. 14 at Little Tokyo will feature Charlie Tanaka sensei in honor of his contributions to Kendo community in California.

In celebrating and support this distinguish recognition, I am requesting each dojo to provide at least two kenshi to participate in the parade march alongside of Tanaka sensei. In addition to march, the group will perform basic kendo demonstration (kiri-kaeshi, uchikomi-geiko...etc. and yes, kenshi will march and perform with shoe) between interval. All ranks are welcome (but would like to have even mix of Kyu/Yudansha, adult/kid, male/female).

Please encourage your dojo members to partake in the parade march to show our appreciation and support to Tanaka sensei, but also as a great personal experience.

Please reply with name, rank, age, and gender of kenshi by Aug. 7.

Any question please let me know.

    Sincerely,

    Mike Yu

note: on 8/9 the sign up deadline was extended to 8/12

Below is some new information regarding the Parade. Please help pass along the information to volunteers. Any question please let me know.

    1. No changing facility available on site so please plan accordingly.
    2. Wear sneakers, athletic shoes...sandals maybe okay, but dangerous if slide.
    3. Meeting location for parade is at 4th St. and Crocker, in Little Tokyo. Please be there by 4pm.
    4. All levels kenshi welcome. Parent and friend feel free to join the parade as well.
    5. Will have few kenshi (maybe 10, 5 groups of 2) perform kkirikaeshi, kihon, or little keiko when parade stops periodically. Rest will just walk, following Tanaka sensei's car.

Currently 3 dojos had responded with around 12 volunteers. I would like to get to 30+ if possible. Please do what you can to encourage participation from kenshi. Please let the parent know that they are welcome to walk along or with their kids if they wish.

Again, looking for support from everyone to help honoring Tanaka sensei and promote kendo.

    Thank you

    Mike
