Lowell Observatory |
A trip out to Arizona and New Mexico provided a chance to swing by Lowell Observatory (Flagstaff, AZ). Lowell
Observatory is historically important in that Pluto was discovered here by Clyde Tombaugh in 1930.
In addition, founder Percival Lowell himself spent a great deal of time visually observing and sketching what he believed to be the canals of Mars.
The Lowell Observatory Clark 24" refractor is one of the historically important instruments here. On clear nights, the refractor is open for public viewing. On this evening, Saturn was in the eyepiece.
Near the Clark telescope, another instrument (16" Cassegrain(?)) was open for viewing at the McAllister Public Observatory. Globular cluster M13 was featured in this telescope.
