Markarian's Chain

Markarian's Chain

Markarian's Chain is a curving line of galaxies (mostly gravitationally related) in Virgo. Aside from making a picturesque curve across the sky, it is a bit of a challenge to get a wide enough field of view to cover the chain, yet have enough resolution to actually see some detail in the galaxies. Some of the galaxies actually don't have much detail visible in them as they are large elliptical galaxies which don't have much structure to them. Click on the image to see a high resolution view.

For an even wider view shot with the same telescope, see this film shot taken on medium format film 20 years ago.
