  • Fri, 1/7/11: Norwalk Dojo first practice of 2011
    Welcome new kenshi: Cha Brandon, Nakagawa Hiromi, Nakagawa Natsumi.

    A quick review of dojo policies:
      - roll call at beginning of practice
      - kata practice 2nd Monday and Friday the following week
      - monthly tournament, last Mon odd, last Fri even months
      - special practices one Sunday per month
      - new members accepted on 1st Fri of odd months
      - beginner testing for keiko, keikogi/hakama, bogu, men
      - toban will be $20 every 6 months, see details
      - shinsa hopefuls: keiko, kata (3 kyu above), taikai

    Thank you to all the kenshi from other dojos who came to our first practice, and thank you so much to the moms for preparing the delicious first keiko feast, including fresh mochi and zenzai!

    We also passed out paperweights from the Norwalk 45th anniversary to dojo members. The multi-colored constantly changing LED lighting is really cool! Thank you to Mr Yoshimura for selecting, designing, and procuring them.

    As announced at the Christmas party, Kariya Yoshijiro and Yoon Brian are the two outstanding kenshi selected to represent Norwalk Dojo in Canada this year. Unfortunately, due to work commitments Brian could not go.

    Congratulations to Kariya Yoshijiro for taking 2nd place in the 3 dan division! He was also on the SCKF team, which took 3rd place in the senior team competition. Way to go!

    Tanaka san is spearheading a drive to support the Paper Cranes for Japan project. We will be folding cranes for the next several practices.

    "We mailed over 10,000 orizurus all together. Southeast Japanese School, Los Alamitos High School, Kyodo System Japanese school, Long Beach Japanese School, Norwalk Kendo Dojo, and all of my friends: thank you for what you have done. I am very proud of all of you."

    Brief excerpts:
    • the kitchen will be closed for remodeling after the recognition dinner (from Sunday 4/17 for a couple of months, until the carnival); we must empty it of all our items
    • the Center will collect donations for Japan relief; the exact recipient will be decided at next week's Board meeting. The Center goal is to collect at least $10K.
    • Nerio scholarship winners will be selected from 8 applicants tonight after the meeting.

  • Japan Relief
    The SEJSCC is collecting donations for Japan earthquake and tsunami relief on a continuing basis throughout the year. If you wish to donate, make your check payable to SEJSCC (note "Japan Relief Fund") and send it to the Center in care of Carrie Nakatani.

  • Sat, 4/16/11: SEJSCC Recognition Dinner
    Congratulations to Mrs Domen for being one of two Center honorees at the dinner (the other was Hy Shishino). Attendees included (in alphabetical order): Amano (1), Domen (5), Fukawa (2), Henmi (1), Kariya (1), Kodama (2), Nagasawa (1), Nakagawa (2), Tanaka (2), Yoshimura (5).

    Thank you to all the volunteers who came for toban duty from 3-6pm, and also for sushi duty from 12-3pm (need names).

    Norwalk competitors included Kim Esther and Yoon Courtney (11-13), Trost Jeffrey and Lim Mitchell (adult), Yoon Brian and Kim John (1-2dan); Brian and John were also selected for the SCKF yudansha team.

    Report from Kim Kay: "Brian placed 3rd in the 1-2 dan division and Courtney placed 2nd in the 11-13 years division. Everyone else did very well. Mitch and Jeff advanced to the quarter finals. Yay!"

      • each group must clean classrooms after use (there is no cleaning service; a custodian comes 2 hours a week just for hallways and bathrooms)

    Norwalk competitors include Matsuda Kane (12-13), Chong Connie and Makino Kentaro (16-18), Yoon Courtney, Hahn Danielle, and Kim Christie (girls 13 and under). Henmi sensei will be court judge, and Mr Yoshimura will be assisting with tournament set up. If you've never witnessed a national kendo event, this is your chance to do so close to home. There will be over 240 participants from around the country. Please come out and support our Norwalk kenshi!

    Congratulations to Hahn Danielle, who won best 8 (13 and under girls), and to Yoon Courtney, who was on the SCKF Girls Team B which took 3rd place. Way to go!

  • Thu, 6/16/11: Passing of Mrs Anne Murao, Steveston Canada
    Mrs. Anne Murao, wife of Ray Murao (head instructor of Steveston Dojo), passed away on 6/16 after a long bout with cancer. Norwalk Dojo has participated in the Steveston Tournament for many years, and we have received many kindnesses from the Murao family. We will have a sympathy card on Friday. If you have ever attended the Steveston Tournament, please come by and sign it.

    Kendo Style will be here (see monthly specials). And don't forget to sign the sympathy card for Mrs Murao. We will also have a get well card for Henmi sensei, who will have an operation soon for kidney stones.

  • Mon, 6/27/11: Soran Bushi class, 9-10pm
    Julie Koga and Kurt Hamra from Hikari Taiko will conduct a one-hour training session after kendo practice on Soran Bushi, a reboot of the traditional Japanese folk dance. All kenshi, family, and friends are encouraged to attend. The class will take up about half the gym floor, so that iaido may still practice.

    This is an all kyu tournament.     Congratulations to dojo tournament winners Ji Daniel (0-5 kyu), Yoon Courtney (4-1 kyu), Lim Mitchell (adult kyu), and Kariya Yoshijiro (yudansha).

    The senseis also met to discuss SCKF applicants for the fall shinsa. Consideration for the shinsa includes regulations and criteria, skill, maturity, attendance, attitude, kendo tests, and kata tests, as appropriate. Since the October shinsa is considered the main shinsa, the attendance criteria is generally 50% (keiko, monthly tournaments, and kata), versus 70% for the April shinsa.

    Norwalk team members are youth team: Kim Christie, Ji Daniel, Kim Andrew, coach Chu Michael; adult team: Trost Jeffrey, Azama Eric, Huang Michael, coach Chang Jeffrey; women's team: Yoon Courtney, Domen Sumi, Hahn Danielle, coach Yoon Brian; yudansha team: Chu Michael, Yoon Brian, Domen Sumi, Amano Shotaro, Chang Jeffrey, Kariya Yoshijiro. Shinpan include Yamaguchi sensei, Henmi sensei, and Kodama Jean.

    Norwalk has set up toban; we need at least 3 volunteers to arrive by 7:30am. We will also have duty on C court for adult kyu and yudansha matches (coordinator, timekeeper, and scorer-table). And we have bento duty: we need 2 volunteers to help bag and distribute bento at the tournament.

    We will have kata practice every Monday and Friday before the shinsa, starting with a kata test Monday 9/26. This is primarily for those testing for 1kyu and above at the shinsa, but yudansha please be available to help if a partner is needed.

    • general meeting is Sunday 12/4 from 12 to 2pm. Each organization must send at least one person to give a report on the year's activities. Bento is $10 per person.

    After this keiko, there is no regular keiko at Norwalk until 1/6/12. However, we will have godo geiko twice, and non-beginners may practice at other dojos (see SCKF holiday schedule).
