SCKF Teleconferencing Committee
An ad hoc committe was formed at the 9/8/18 SCKF Board of Directors (BoD)
meeting to look into services for teleconferencing in to future meetings.
Research thus far:
- Google Hangouts - a free service, which also allows for projection of the
screen during a meeting. All that is needed is a gmail account, which most
of us have.
- Zoom - another free service with the option of high-quality video and
audio, but it limits to 40 mins/meeting, otherwise there is a charge. May
not work for our sometimes lengthy meetings.
- Uber Conference - also free but with a few limitations. It is a bargain
version of Go-to-Meeting. Limits callers to 10 people.
- Apple FaceTime - also an option but makes broadcasting any presentation
more challenging
- Go To Meeting - has a free option or paid option
- Skype - very similar to Google Hangouts, but with a bit less functionality.
Requires an account but is free.
- Paid options: Go To Meeting, WebEx, etc.
Recommendation from Mark Schultzel:
- I've used Google Hangouts with a number of the surgeons in my group
for conference calls and case conferences. We've been able to show
advanced imaging like MRI's, surgical videos, and PowerPoint without
issue, and the VoIP quality seems good quality. I'd recommend using it for
SCKF. It's free, most folks have a Gmail account for either themselves or
the dojo, and since we use the Google Docs for our document sharing anyway,
it would be easy to reference info.
Proposed rules for use:
- Each dojo must physically attend the SCKF BoD meeting at least once per
quarter.
- BoD members must physically attend election meetings (November in even
numbered years) and other meetings at the discretion of the BoD
- Only BoD members (dojo representatives and officers) may teleconference in.
SCKF meetings are open to members, but they must be physically present
to observe.
