SCKF announcements, most recent on top

5/10/20:
One of the hard things during this time is the tough decisions we all have to make. It is my regret to inform you that last night, the SCKF Board of Directors has decided to shut down ALL SCKF events for the rest of 2020 including tournaments, seminars and practices....with the option to change if safety permits. This decision was made so SCKF can do our part to fight this pandemic. Governor Newsom has stated that as of this past Friday, we are in Stage 2 of a plan where Stage 4 will be when high risk events can take place. Kendo is a high risk activity and it is unknown when Stage 4 will happen. Furthermore, Los Angeles is one of the biggest hotspots of COVID-19 in the country.

I do think when we are officially in Stage 3, we can start normal keiko at the dojo level but that would depend on your dojo and the local government. Obviously, we should add precautions to our dojo practices and guidelines will be sent at that time.

Also, FYI...AUSKF is renewing our liability insurance this month. For those dojos that are currently doing "zoom" keiko, it is prudent that all participating kenshi are active AUSKF members since the liability insurance also covers these zoom keikos.

I want to thank all my fellow SCKF Officers, Dojo Representatives and Advisors for all your support during this tough time. It makes me feel confident that the dreams of our youth will continue along with the advancement of our kendo.

Sincerely,
Kevin Tadasu Abe
SCKF President

3/20/20:
Because of the orders by the Mayor of LA and Governor of CA and many concerns, SCKF will shut down all operations until 5/8/20 indefinitely. That includes the next board meeting 4/11, Team SCKF training 4/12 & 4/26 and the Nisei Week Tournament 5/3/20.

In this uncertain time, I think most of you will be working from home so please keep in mind having a regular schedule is important for your personal well-being. Professionals suggest to set up a space which will be your work space.....get up at a regular time, change out of your pajamas and into real clothes, and begin working at a regular time everyday.

Also, even though we cannot practice kendo as we normally do, we can still do a lot of the things we do in practice, like the warm up exercises, stretching, mokuso and a lot of suburis which will make you stronger. Go outside for a run or even just a walk! We can all come out stronger in the end.

I think even just calling one another instead of just emailing and hearing another person's voice and verbal communication is very important. I hope to talk to all of you soon!

Sincerely,
Kevin Tadasu Abe
SCKF President

3/12/20:
On 3/11/20, the State of California issued the following announcement:
California Public Health Experts: Mass Gatherings Should be Postponed or Canceled Statewide to Slow the Spread of COVID-19. "Governor Gavin Newsom announced that California public health officials this evening issued an updated policy on gatherings to protect public health and slow the spread of COVID-19. The state's public health experts have determined that gatherings should be postponed or canceled across the state until at least the end of March. Non-essential gatherings must be limited to no more than 250 people, while smaller events can proceed only if the organizers can implement social distancing of 6 feet per person. Gatherings of individuals who are at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19 should be limited to no more than 10 people, while also following social distancing guidelines."

In light of the policy, SCKF events will be canceled through the end of March, including Team SCKF practice 3/22 and SCKF shido geiko 3/29. The SCKF spring shinsa 4/18 will also be canceled to discourage any practice.

We recommend that your dojo either implement social distancing for your practices, or suspend practices completely, at least through the end of March.
